It’s all in the detail
In the battle for viticultural hearts and minds, on an adequately drained site with good aspect & optimal elevation, climate wins out over soil in England most of the time. But so also does the micro-climate, from field level right down to the individual vineyard parcel or block. Soil and nutrition are clearly extremely important factors as well, but we care most about cumulative Growing Degree Days, Sunshine hours, Humidity and Rainfall from April to October. These are most critical in delivering abundant, clean, ripe grapes to the winery. It is a data-obsessive’s paradise.
At Fox & Fox, we monitor live vineyard conditions with our central weather-station and micro conditions within each vineyard block using data-loggers. This helps us to understand how the vineyard parcels differ in terms of their needs and vulnerabilities, and importantly when to pre-empt problems and apply treatments. It will also allow us to build up a database to compare conditions with previous vintages.
